General Voting Procedure of 2024 and Voting by Overseas Indian National

As per Section 20A of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, an Indian citizen living abroad has completed 18 years of age as on 1st January of the year and not acquired citizenship of any foreign country is entitled to be enrolled in the electoral roll of the constituency of his/her native place as per the address given in his/her Passport. For enrollment under this provision, an application has to be made in Form 6A. The details of filling Form 6A, along with guidelines for filling up the form, can be accessed on the official website of the election of India https://ecisveep.nic.in/voters/overseas-voters/. The Government of India has also launched an application in the name of: Voter Helpline (by Election Commission of India) wherein all information and forms are available.

As of now, there is no provision made in the existing law for voting at Indian Mission abroad, or voting online, or voting by post. One can only vote in person at the polling station provided for the electors of the locality within which the address in the Passport falls. Therefore, Indian nation living abroad and eligible as per criteria mentioned in Para 1 have to be present in physical in the country on the day of poll.
